Federal Way High School

February 15, 2008
The Federal Way High School DECA/Marketing classes recently hosted an extremely successful blood drive for Cascade Regional Blood Services. Their goal as an organization was to participate in a community service project and put into practice the marketing skills they’ve learned. They certainly did that, registering 125 donors during the drive. This was a significant increase from the 100 donors registered at their last drive and a reflection of the hard work and commitment of all. The units collected directly support St. Francis and other hospitals in the area.

Under the direction of Mr. Oldfather, marketing instructor, the group promoted their drive inside the school as well as with outside organizations. The group partnered with local businesses, asking for donations and gifts to raffle for the donors. They also acquired funds and food to provide breakfast snacks for the students that donated the morning of the blood drive. They did a fantastic job recruiting students to donate, using blood drop costumes and other creative promotional ideas.

Mr. Oldfather, the Marketing Teacher at FWHS, was a blood recipient after a car accident. He takes an active role in the project, encouraging his students to get involved and help their community. He is always there to encourage and assist them with their marketing projects, and to help make their drives the best they can possibly be.

Federal Way High School’s DECA Club and Mr. Oldfather’s marketing class combined to sign-up 158 students and faculty to donate at the February 7th blood drive.

The drive was used as a hands-on marketing and promotional event so students could put leadership and marketing principals into practice to create a successful community event. The students began the project with a tour of the blood center (in Tacoma) January 19. They also hosted marketing presentations from the blood center staff (Jan. 22). They solicited donations for preparing  a pre drive breakfast for donors by asking local businesses for donations. They also asked for donations for prizes for a raffle. Businesses that contributed were: Costco, Wal*Mart, Totem Foods, Red Lobster, Old Country Buffet and several others.

The students recruited the most donors ever registered for their high school blood drive with Cascade Regional Blood Services. Student volunteers ran the all-day blood drive, which included three bloodmobiles and a central coordination center located inside the school. A system was put into place to ensure operations and logistics ran smoothly during the drive. Student volunteers used walkie-talkies to keep a steady flow of donors going to and from the bloodmobiles. Overall, it was a smooth event and provided enough blood donations to nearly supply local hospitals for a day!
