We perform this procedure for cancer patients in place of, or in addition to, bone marrow transplantation, but at a much lower cost.
We collect PBPC ("mother" blood cells that produce other types of blood cells) from the cancer patient. The cells are stored frozen at Cascade Regional Blood Services while the patient undergoes high does of radiation or chemotherapy to destroy the cancer cells. The therapies can also destroy normal progenitor cells found in the bone marrow.
When reinfused to the patient, the cells migrate to the interior of certain bones and begin producing necessary red and white blood cells and platelets.
